Message: Creativity

Every now and then I need to get nonverbal, so I return to visual art. A year or so ago, words began to sneak into the visual as “messages” written on handmade paper and wrapped up with other materials. This little piece was recently accepted into a juried show at an NC gallery.Message: CreativityWritten inside:…See More

book trailers

This morning I added a video book trailer that Wim and I made for Payshapes and the Bear, a bilingual collection of children's stories by Lucina Kathmann. Lucina has it on her page too, but she's in Belgrade right now on business for International PEN (she's an international vice president) and couldn't bring her trailer to the attention of the trailer competition. Wim and I have made trailers for our own books, too. We keep them brief and to the point, and we have a good time making them.See More

Moved!

We finally got moved! For 13 years, Wim and I lived in the lovely colonial city of San Miguel de Allende, Gto., Mexico. There we wrote novels, did all kinds of freelance work (as usual), were active in the local PEN chapter, ran a scholarship program for at-risk Mexican kids, and adopted a daughter. Actually, we adopted her twice to meet U.S. immigration requirements. That meant working through legal processes in two bureaucracies over you don't want to know how many years. But now we're in…See More

stories travel

Wim and I do a lot of work with myths and legends: retolds, reference materials, and fiction. Later this month The Death of the Good WIzard will be added to our middle-grade series, Red Monocle—adventures in stories from around the world. The third book in that series features Anansi, a wonderful West African character. I wrote an Anansi story for READ magazine in 2007 and recently gave permission for it to be translated into Spanish for a children's book by a small Chilean publishing house.…See More

Pat Perrin left a comment for Don McCauley
"Hi Don, I see you're in NC. My husband and I are moving to Chapel Hill in 2 weeks. Would like to know more about your enterprises. I'm joining some groups that I think you might have started. What's the difference between teen fiction…"

International Awards

The new edition of our eccentric early novel—The Jamais Vu Papers—has won the Visionary Fiction category of the International Book Awards. (It was also on the short list for the Montaigne Medal given by Eric Hoffer Book Awards.) The JVP motto: "Did you ever get the strangest feeling you've never been here before?" See more about the book on the JVP web page. But that's not all! Our Red Monocle series for…See More

videos up

Finally got our discussions of one book up — and I’m delighted to be in this great cyberspace space with all these interesting people. Back here in the hard physical world — we’re moving. Next month! So Wim and/or I will be glad to talk to groups starting in September, but it will take us that long to get our lives organized. I guess “organized” isn’t exactly the right word because we’ve never really been. After 13 years in the beautiful Mexican town of San Miguel de Allende, we’re returning to…See More
